Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common heart disease diagnosed in cats. It is characterized by an abnormal thickening (hypertrophy) of the left ventricular myocardium. Understanding this disease is vital for proactive management.

What happens to the heart?

In cats with HCM, the muscle walls of the heart's left ventricle become abnormally thick and stiff. This makes it difficult for the heart chambers to fill with blood properly. Over time, this results in pressure backup, leading to left atrial enlargement, fluid in the lungs (congestive heart failure), or blood clot formation (saddle thrombus).

The Subclinical Stage

Most cats with HCM remain asymptomatic or "subclinical" for years. Heart muscle changes develop silently. Identifying the condition early—via vet stethoscope screening for murmurs/gallop rhythms, measuring NT-proBNP levels, and performing echocardiograms—allows veterinary doctors to introduce preventive therapies before heart failure occurs.
